Whilst on a residency at Artists Unlimited in Bielefeld, Germany, Artyarn's Rachael Elwell has been invited to make some small pieces of work for the annual christmas fundraiser 'WeihnArt 09' which will be taking place on the 4th December 09 at the Artists Unlimited Gallery.
Keeping things all warm and wolly for the winter season, she is creating a small series of knitted and crocheted canvases. Here is the first one complete, made using the mosaic knitting technique.

Purlpuri Knits

Purlpuri Knits

"Purlpuri blog is mainly about art projects I am getting around to. At the moment I am very interested and inspired all the crazy things people knit and crochet. I am also interested in interdisciplinary practices, when people mix up with different mediums and try out new materials and ways to make things. This blog is to interact and communicate with people with similar interests and getting other artists involved." (Valpuri Vihriala)

Purlpuri Knits is a new blog by visual artist Valpuri Vihriala - Follow her work as she completes her final year on the Interactive Arts Degree at manchester Metropolitan University, primarily working with knitting and crochet as an artistic medium.

For the braver or sillier souls among us, darkness provides the perfect cover for a little mischief, as Mark Thomas finds out: The Observer, Sunday 1st November 2009

"London is perfect at 3am...All I have for company is an urge to whistle As Time Goes By, a young woman called Perri and a bag full of knitting. And if you're wondering why I'm here, then that makes two of us. All I know is I am about to desecrate a public work of art."

Knitting at Temporary Autonomous Arts This Week

Wednesday 4th to Saturday 7th November

A cultural, interactive autonomous space where people are free to be, free to create and free to express themselves.

Over the three days of this unique alternative art event there will be a 'Crafty Garden Corner' where you are invited to come together in the creation of sock creatures, knitted and origami animals and crocheted spiders webs and the like.

The knitting activity of the event concludes on Saturday with a Big Knit Day encouraging people to knit up a bit of something with the aim of yarn bombing Manchester 'happy style' by attaching positive messages to their pieces and spreading good vibes through the streets.

And there's also the chance to participate in the creation of a quilt in support of World Aids Day.

All crafty talent is welcome and there is also a need for donations; any old wool, socks (not too old and smelly!) fabric, knitting and crochet needles, basically anything that can be made into something quite beautiful!

So here's your chance to get involved in the reclamation of space, transforming it into a vibrant, organic, techno artistic statement and make a contribution to an exciting, free and positive alternative art world.

In a secret location. Call 07762 599453 from Wednesday 4th November for directions.

And check www.forbiddenartsmanchester.org.uk / www.taaexhibitions.org / www.myspace.com/taamanchester for more details, a timetable of events and images of past events.

'Wooly Monsters' at The Roby Parent & Toddler Group

Over the last few weeks ArtYarn have been delivering a series of exciting workshops at The Roby Parent & Toddler Group in Longsight, Manchester.

The aim of the workshops was to knit and create a series of 'Wooly Monsters' to be showcased at today's Halloween party. While the children got creative designing the monsters with Tony, the Arts & Crafts volunteer, the mums and dads got knitting with ArtYarn to make the monsters come alive!

With knitters of all levels of skill, from complete beginners who'd never picked up needles to people who'd knitted previously and just needed a little reminder to get clicking away and total pros, it's been a fun few weeks for all.

And here they are; the Mighty Wonderful 'Wooly Monsters'!

From left to right we have; Igor by Sarah, Snot My Monster by Helen and Rowan, Blob, Zig by Rachel, Morag by Shameela and Rachel's Pumkin Basket (with a cardboard monster designed by Lucy in the background).

After a democratic ballot the three winners were; Shameela's Morag in first place, Helen's and Rowan's Snot My Monster in second place and Rachel's Zig in third place.

And I think you'll agree that they are all equally as monstrously marvelous!

KnittaPlease announces an open call for submissions...

Hello knitters,

We're making a book!

From Knitta's beginning, we have tried to focus on the community aspect of yarnbombing - how art brings people together across generational, national, and political lines. One of our main motivations is to inspire continued growth for the movement around the world. As Knitta has traveled to create our own tags during the last few years, we have met countless knitters and yarnbombers who are also participating in the movement. Out of our desire to document this global community, Magda is curating a gallery style book on yarnbombing which will illustrate the international extent of the yarnbombing movement. The plan is to include approximately 275 images from knitters [and crocheters] around the world that represent unique interactions with our urban environments, innovation in textile design, and an overall sense of integration between art and craft. We would love to have you contribute. Photos can be from past, completed projects or from projects specifically designed for the purpose.

Email to request further information on digital image submission specification and photo/project guidelines. Also - please pass this information on to anyone who might be interested! The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2009.

Thanks! I hope to hear from you!
Best,
Karen McClellan
Assistant, KnittaPlease

Catheter Bag Cosy, 2001

A continuous flow of blue liquid is pumped through vinyl tubing. The tubing begins as a tidy ball of "yarn" holding knitting needles and flows through a knit cozy around a catheter bag. Finally the blue liquid drips onto cotton padding. Embroidery on the cotton padding reads "familiarity breeds contempt". The photographs present the typical absorbency tests of diaper and tampon commercials.
